The party performed a tactical retreat. Having spent a few days beneath the surface of Eria, they returned the way they had come and using a few fly spells withdrew entirely to the surface.
Spending the next day on the surface they had some long discussions, about what to do and which ways to go. Chalyb ended the discussion by stating that they were going to return to the caves and explore all the other passages, then decide what to do.
The explorations took some time, and led to a number of discoveries. In one section of the caves there lived a tribe of tiny little beings no taller than Chalyb's hand. These little spriggans ambushed the party with illusion magic and tiny poisoned arrows, which were no larger than human darts. Fortunately Chalyb was immune, and Vanlenlo was sanctuaried. Ana almost fell though a fissure into the darkness beneath, but Kentaro saved her at the cost of being temporarily blinded by magic. Donna too was blinded, and Raphael fell to a puddle of magical grease.
The party managed to pull out and away, and then both Donna and Ana (after Donna restored her and Kentaro's sight.) launched fireballs down the hall.
The party found more evidence of the great tunnel worms.
While exploring a particularly large cavern, the party encountered huge fungal growths. When some mobile fungus came out to the party, Balla attacked it, and the party followed suit. Chalyb, whom Ana had cast fly upon for scouting continued blithely on. The party found that these fungal beings exploded upon being killed and almost lost several members, when Vanlenlo received a telepathic message from one of the beings for the party to leave. He cast plant growth in compensation of their destroyed peoples.
Retreating, the party came upon a wall of ice in another tunnel and another great void. Circling around and completing their own mapping, they found the remains of a dwarf who had a less complete map upon his corpse. Comparing both their own scribbles and the map, Chalyb created a reasonable map of the entire system they had mapped so far.
The group went back to the cave where the Ice Bugs had attacked them and sneaking around the hole went on. They came to a great cavern filled with ice in such a manner as to create passages. There were several Ice holes.
The party explored the cavern and eventually found bodies in the ice. Chalyb melted much of the ice away with his sword, then used a pick to get to several dwarven bodies. While this was happening, a dozen or so of the Ice Bugs attacked the party. Fighting them off, the party heard a great motion out in the darkness, and a Giant Ice Spidercrab came forward and began to spear the magical images Donna used for protection.
The battle was long and bitter. The party gravely injured, even as they smote the ice things. Eventually Ana and Donna's magic laid the great ice spidercrab low, and the others were destroyed by the warriors.
At this time, Chalyb seemed almost possessed by some odd force and drove his sword into the remains of the Spidercrab. It flared out in a tremendous geyser of flame, destroying the remained of the creature, and then leaving Chalyb standing there bewildered and not a little bereft of his senses.
While Van and Kentaro tended to the wounded, Raphael searched the dwarves, finding some coin, and a suit of magical chainmail as well as two magical gems.
