Email and Turn Responses
Schedule
GM turns are written TBD, usually in the
afternoon. Players should have their responses in by the prior
evening. If responses hit my email the morning of a turn, they may or
may not be included / considered in the GM turn.
Turn Guidelines
Some general guidelines for keeping the game moving.
- Write for your character(s). Stay focused on what they do, and
be direct and action-oriented. Don't speculate about what you
could do. Do it!
- Deal with the immediate, but take a look ahead
too. Think immediate, mid-term and long-term
action. You need not explicitly write out these three actions
each turn, but keep them in mind as you write to maintain flow
and keep things moving forward.
- Decide. As GM I try to leave each turn I
write at a decision point. Be sure whatever decision facing the
group actually gets decided!
- Don't write action for other player's character(s)
without permission. Stick to your own role. Suggestions
are fine, however.
- Describe action. When doing something risky
it's perfectly OK to indicate how much caution you use. Don't
paralyze your act with too many conditionals. It's perfectly
OK to say "I carefully do X."
- Ask. If you have questions about things during
the turn, don't hesitate to ask. In general I try not to color
player thinking during discussion, but I read everything and try
to respond to questions as I see them.
Combat Turns
Combat turns are a bit more structured. Try to write in three
round increments. We won't always get through three rounds, but
it helps to have a skeleton in place so we can move through combat
swiftly. A short preamble indicating overall desire, then three
individual rounds is a great framework to write to.
One Turn, One Thread
Please keep all turn responses in the same email thread, so they
are easy to find and read. Don't change subject lines, as this
splits threads in some mail clients. If you have non-turn
questions / discussion, please DO split that into a separate
thread so it doesn't get lost in the turn discussion.
Private Messages
The mailing list directs all replies back to the list. if you need
to send a private message, double-check your addresses. All
contact info will be included in the turn reports.
