The Locals

Donnatelli (Donna)

Donna has lived near Lope her entire life. She grew up on her family farm, a small but fairly prosperous farm on the east side of town. Her family raised horses and goats, and earned a reasonable living. Donna helped out around the farm, but her real love was riding and exploring the great forests that stretched to the east.

It was in the Onsho Woods that she met Tafalio, a hedge wizard and herbalist who lived in a tiny hut on the forest's borders. His stories of magic piqued Donna's interest and she began to spend more and more time studying with Tafalio, and less and less time at home. Thus Donna was not at home when her family was slain, torn apart in the barn, bones and skulls arranged in odd patterns upon the floor.

The investigation into her family's deaths resolved nothing, and Donna threw herself into her studies, hoping to develop the skills needed to uncover what really happened to her family. It was also around this time that she met Vanlenlo, the Keeper of Eria who married her neighbor Margesi. While others around town felt Donna was odd for continuing to live in her family's home after the murders, Vanlenlo was merely accepting, perhaps because of his own personal tragedies.

Two years after her family's deaths, Donna met Ana, a younger woman new to Lope and obviously out of place. Her accent labeled her as someone of import, but she was friendly enough, and after the two discovered a common interest in herbalism, then magic, they became friends. Ana lives in town, but often visits Donna at her farm and accompanies her on visits to Tafalio.

Now, five years after her family's death, Donna seems reasonably happy. She continues to live on her family's farm, leasing out much of the land to neighboring farmers (including Vanlenlo). She still raises horses, but only in a minor way. She spends much of her time in the fields and along the edges of the forest, gathering herbs, visiting with Tafalio, or riding with Ana.

Raphael and Balla

Ahh restless youth. Raphael and Balla are younger sons of local merchant and dealer in fine leather goods Antonio Giacomo. Unlike their two older brothers Leonardo and Piero, Raphael and Balla are known bravos or scoundrels, depending upon who you talk to. Raphael is often involved in the weekly brawls at the Inn of the Nine Lamps, while Balla has been chased out of the bed of more than one farmer's daughter. It seems the pair are in constant competition to see who will get killed first, and in the best style.

The brother's family has long since given up on having the pair contribute anything to the family business, but they get along in spite of their differences. The pair have made something of a name for themselves locally as men who can get things done, provide the thing needing done isn't too complex and has some element of danger.

Both of the brothers are familiar with Vanlenlo in his capacity as healer, and both know of Donna as well, her family's tragedy was common gossip for years. The pair are well known to most of the local merchants. Raphael has something of a reputation as a bowman, and Balla often organizes and guides hunts for the local well-to-do. He also breeds and trains hunting dogs, a popular commodity in Lope.

Vanlenlo Vanselee

Van arrived about 5 years ago, assigned to the local Keepers of Eria. His arrival created quite a stir and many folks are still put off by Van's disfigurement (he was horribly burned in a fire). Once people get past the appearance they find a friendly and gentle spirit, willing to help anyone with anything.

About a year after he moved to Lope, Van married Margesi Kertari, a local widow. The pair now live on Margesi's farm east of Lope, and have two children, Casper and Kally. Their farm is fairly prosperous, specializing in unusual vegetables and fruits that Van seems to grow quite easily. Van also does a considerable amount of brewing, using his own grain and hops, and selling to the local taverns.

Most everyone in town knows there is some black mark in Van's past, but few dare ask about it, and Van doesn't discuss his past at all. He works hard for the local priesthood, and that's enough to keep most people happy. Some still wonder though, especially when it turned out that Van knew the newcomers in town, Chalyb and Kentaro.

The Newcomers

Chalyb and Kentaro

When this pair rode into town a few months ago, most thought they were simply another pair of toughs come to make some cash as mercenaries. Most were surprised when the pair settled down in town. Chalyb is an ex-Legionnaire, and comes across as a real hard case, while Kentaro is a gentler sort, though a bar fight quickly convinced the local toughs he was no pushover. When the pair started visiting Van, people began to talk, wondering what exactly brought the three to Lope.
